The Borso d'Este Bible in Rome. A Jubilee Masterpiece

05 November 2025

From November 14, 2025, to January 16, 2026, the Borso d'Este Bible, one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian Renaissance art, will be on display in the Capitolare Hall of the Senate of the Republic, at Piazza della Minerva, 38, in Rome.

The exhibition, which forms part of the artistic program of the Jubilee, is promoted by the Senate of the Italian Republic, in collaboration with the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Culture, the Estensi Galleries, the Government Special Commissioner for the Jubilee, and the Treccani Encyclopedia Institute.

The event offers an extraordinary opportunity to admire the Borso d'Este Bible, one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian Renaissance art. Created between 1455 and 1461 by the calligrapher Pietro Paolo Marone and the illuminators Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi, the work represents one of the finest expressions of the art of miniature painting, bringing together ornamental refinement, artistic expertise, and religious inspiration.

The event is quite unique, as the manuscript is preserved in the Estense Library in Modena and is exhibited to the public only on very rare occasions.

Visitors will have touchscreens to consult the digital version of the Bible, with ultra-high-resolution images available.

The inauguration will take place on Thursday, November 13th. Speakers will include the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa; the Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano; the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli; the Special Commissioner for the Jubilee, Roberto Gualtieri; the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for the Evangelization of the Holy See, Archbishop Rino Fisichella; Carlo Ossola, the President of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia; and Alessandra Necci, Director of the Gallerie Estensi.
