For 50 years, from 1934, this church served as the national church for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was originally called Santa Aura in Strada Iulia and there was a convent of nuns attached to it. In 1572, when the church was in an extremely poor condition, it was entrusted to the Confraternita dello Spirito Santo dei Napoletani, who demolished the previous structure and created a completely new church to be dedicated to the Holy Spirit based on designs by the architect Domenico Fontana.
