2023 - Year of the Council

2023 - Year of the Council

Pope Francis has asked that the two years preceding the Jubilee should be marked in a particular way, the first to the rediscovery of the teachings of Vatican II, and the second to prayer. The Year of the Council opened on 11 October 2022 with a solemn Eucharistic Liturgy on the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council presided over by the Holy Father. From that moment on, Christian communities around the world have been involved in paths of study and reflection on the four Vatican II Constitutions: Dei Verbum, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Lumen Gentium, and Gaudium et Spes.

In spring 2023, 34 short volumes entitled "Council Notebooks" were published for the Dicastery for Evangelization by the Shalom publishing house. These booklets are written in non-academic language with the aim of helping people to rediscover the riches of the Council documents. They were designed to have a wide circulation in the Christian community, and to be used in catechetical courses, clergy meetings and in workshops held in preparation for the Jubilee.

They have already been translated into Spanish by the Episcopal Conference of Spain and into English by the Indian Episcopal Conference.
