The Holy See will participate in the Osaka EXPO in 2025

The 2025 Universal Exposition (EXPO 2025) will take place in Osaka, Japan, from 13 April 2025 to 13 October 2025.

The theme chosen for this edition is "Designing Future Society for Our Lives", with three distinct sub-themes: "Saving Lives", "Empowering Lives" and "Connecting Lives".

The Holy See, thanks to a collaboration with the Italian Pavilion, will be present at the event with its own space for organizing cultural events and important art exhibitions.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization’s Section for Fundamental Questions of Evangelization in the World, has been appointed by the Holy Father to prepare and organize the official participation of the Holy See at EXPO, as Commissioner General. In that role, the Archbishop has appointed as Deputy Commissioners for the event the Monsignor Pietro Bongiovanni, Parish Priest of San Salvatore in Lauro parish in Rome and Father Nuno Alexandre Henriques De Lima, Parish Priest of Tamatsukuri Catholic Church, St. Mary's Cathedral parish in Osaka, Japan. The Commissioner General will rely on their support to assist and represent the Holy See in the preparations for EXPO 2025 and for the duration of the entire event.

The theme of the Holy See Pavilion will be: "Beauty brings Hope". Through an exploration of art and aesthetics, the Pavilion will aim to present the profound concept that beauty, in its multiple facets, can be a source of inspiration and hope for the construction of a more harmonious and participatory future for society. Beauty has always played a fundamental role in Christian evangelization and has been present since the very origins of Christianity in various forms of artistic expression. Over the centuries, art has become the privileged way through which the Church has been able to express and represent the profoundness of the faith. The "Via Pulchritudinis" has proved to be the most effective tangible means of communicating the essence of faith through beauty.

Through exhibitions, artistic installations one off events, the Holy See Pavilion will show how beauty can act as a catalyst for Hope, uniting people on the path towards a shared future of renewed spirituality.

The theme is linked closely to that of the 2025 Jubilee, whose theme is "Pilgrims of Hope", thus acting as a bridge that connects the two events.

Archbishop Fisichella said: “Today mankind lives with multiple hopes thanks to the advances in science and technology.  But, just as in the theme of the Jubilee, so also the theme for EXPO 2025 emphasizes the importance of Hope, in the singular, which comes only from God. Mankind still needs to hope."

大阪・関西万博2025へのバチカンの参加

2025年日本国際博覧会（略称「大阪・関西万博」）が、2025年4月13日から2025年10月13日まで、大阪（日本）で開催されます。

「大阪・関西万博」は、いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン（Designing Future Society for Our Lives）」をテーマとし、「Saving Lives（いのちを救う）」、「Empowering Lives（いのちに力を与える）」、「Connecting　Lives（いのちをつなぐ）」という、3つのサブテーマが設定されています。

バチカンは、イタリア館の協力を得て、文化イベントや貴重な展覧会を開催するためのスペースを通してイベントに参加します。

ローマ教皇庁福音宣教省・世界宣教部門副長官のサルバトーレ・フィジケッラ大司教は、2025年「大阪・関西万博」のバチカンの公式参加を準備し管理するために、館長としてローマ教皇より任命されました。フィジケッラ大司教は、サン・サルヴァトーレ・イン・ラウロ教会の主任司祭ピエトロ・ボンジョヴァンニ神父と、大阪カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂・カトリック玉造教会の主任司祭ヌノ・デ・リマ神父を、副コミッショナー・副館長に任命しました。館長は、イベントの準備と全開催期間において協力し、バチカンを代表するための、二人の支えに信頼しています。

バチカンのパビリオンのテーマは、「美は希望をもたらす」です。当パビリオンは、芸術と美学の探求を通じて、美が、その多様な側面において、より調和に満ちた分かち合う未来の社会の構築への、インスピレーションと希望の源である、という深い概念を伝えることを目指しています。美は常にキリスト教宣教で重要な役割を果たしてきました。キリスト教が始まって以来、それは芸術表現を通して具現化されていきました。世紀を経て、芸術は教会が信仰の深さを表現し、象徴するための特権的な手段となりました。「Via Pulchritudinis」（美の道）は、美そのものを通じて、信仰の核心を具体的に伝えるための最も効果的な手段です。

バチカンのパビリオンは、展示、芸術的な造形、ユニークな視点を通じて、精神的な刷新を分かち合う未来へと歩む人々を結びながら、美がいかにして希望の触媒となりうるのかという考察を提供します。さらに、このテーマは、2025年の聖年のテーマ「希望の巡礼者」と融合し、両イベントを結ぶ橋としての役割も帯びています。

「現代人は科学と技術の進歩によって多くの希望を抱いています」 と 副長官のサルバトーレ・フィジケッラ大司教は強調しました。 「しかし、聖年のテーマに表されているように、万博のテーマもまた、神からのみ来る唯一の希望の重要性を伝えたいと思っています。人類はまだ希望を抱く必要があるからです。」
