Free film festival ahead of the Jubilee starts on 14 April

From 14 to 21 April 2024, at the Cinema delle Provincie (viale delle Provincie 41), a film festival will be held in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, organized by the first section of the Dicastery for Evangelization, entitled “Faces and Counterfaces of Hope”. There will be 14 screenings taking place offering a journey of reflection including cult films of Italian cinema, films from the current film season and other titles released in cinemas in recent years. At some screenings, directors, journalists, critics and cinema experts will speak. Entrance is free while places last. No tickets will be needed to attend.

 

- The season opens with the film “La porta del Cielo”, directed by Vittorio De Sica and Cesare Zavattini (1945), in a restored version, scheduled for Sunday 14 April at 9 pm. Monsignor Dario Viganò,  the curator of the restored version and Vice Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. will speak.

 

- Monday 15 April at 5pm the film “One life” (2023) by James Hawes, with Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins in the role of the English philanthropist Nicholas Winton will be shown. Lorenzo Ciofani, a cinema critic, will speak before the screening.

 

- Monday 15 April at 9pm  “Le concert” (2009) directed by Radu Mihăileanu will be screened. The film director and the critic Federico Pontiggia, will speak before the screening.

 

- Tuesday 16 April at 5pm and 9pm the film “La chimera” (2023) by Alice Rohrwacher with Josh O'Connor and Isabella Rossellini will be shown. Monsignor Davide Milani, president of the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo, will speak before the screening.

 

- Wednesday 17 April at 5pm and 9pm the film “Chiara” (2002) by Susanna Nicchiarelli will be screened. Speaking at the end of the screening will be the director Susanna Nicchiarelli and Monsignor Davide Milani, president of the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo.

 

- Thursday 18 April at 5pm the film will be “Silence” (2016) by Martin Scorsese. The critics Gianluca Arnone and Diego Matteo S.J. will speak at the beginning.

 

 

- Thursday 18 April at 9pm the film “Another end” by Piero Messina will be shown. Director Piero Messina will speak before the screening.

- Friday 19 April at 5pm and 9pm the film “Perfect Days” (2023) by Wim Wenders will screen. Speakers before the 5pm screening are film critic, Valerio Sammarco, and Isabella Lapalorcia, from the Institute of Japanese Culture. While before the 9pm screening, critic Marina Sanna and Angela Prudenzi, critic, producer and director, will speak.

- Saturday 20 April at 5pm and 9pm it will be the turn of the film “Leaf in the wind” (2023) by Aki Kaurismäki. Anne Riitta Ciccone, the director and screenwriter, will speak at the end of the 5pm screening and before the 9pm screening.

- The film "Cristo Proibito" (1951) by Curzio Malaparte closes the festival on Sunday 21 April at 9pm. Journalist Enrico Magrelli, will speak.
