Bulgaria - San Paolo alla Regola

An ancient tradition claims that this church was founded on the spot where the Apostle Paul lived during his time in Rome. It was firstly transformed into an oratory, then into a church during the fourth century. It was only in 1594 that the church was entrusted to the care of the Discalced Augustinians, but in 1619 it was handed over to the Sicilian province of the Third Order Regular of St Francis, who instituted a “Collegium Siculum”.

Thanks to a concession from the Vicariate of Rome, the Orthodox Sunday liturgy has been celebrated here since 2014, and because of this, the church has become a focal point for the Bulgarian Orthodox Community in Rome.
